mata ortiz pottery

Holidays call for gifts that express thoughtfulness and appreciation. If you are looking for something truly unique this season, Mata Ortiz pottery offers an elegant solution. Internationally known for its precise designs and intricate forms, each piece represents months of skilled handwork.

When you hold a piece of this pottery, you are holding the story of an ancient art form revived by a determined young man in a small Mexican village. This holiday gift guide showcases why this art form makes an exceptional gift for collectors, nature lovers, and anyone who values handcrafted beauty with cultural depth.

The Story Behind Mata Ortiz Pottery

In the 1970s, Juan Quezada Celado discovered ancient pottery sherds near his village in Chihuahua, Mexico. He studied the pieces and taught himself to recreate these vessels using traditional techniques, then shared his knowledge with family and neighbors.

Today, more than 500 villagers craft both traditional and contemporary Mata Ortiz pottery. When you gift these pieces, you’re supporting living artists while celebrating cultural heritage.

What Makes Mata Ortiz Pottery Special

The entire pueblo creates outstanding, hand-built pots following centuries-old methods. No pottery wheel is used. Artists dig their own clay, create natural paints and paintbrushes, and fire pieces using traditional pit ovens.

The Handbuilding Process

Potters begin with either a large ball of clay which they flatten and then gently pinch and pull the clay to  form vessel shapes. Or, the potters use the coil and scrape method where they create coils, stack them to form the vessel and then pink them together. In either case the walls of the vessel are scraped and smoothed thin and balanced. After sanding, artists paint intricate designs using brushes made from the children’s hair.

Mata Ortiz pottery features two main styles: geometric patterns with thin lines in earth tones, and zoomorphic designs featuring desert wildlife and Day of the Dead imagery.
